Gas Leak Shuts Down Franklin Boulevard

As emergency crews were leaving the scene, another call came in that a tree had fallen on power lines on Arthur Avenue.

Updated 11:10 p.m. July 1

The Lakewood police and fire departments closed Franklin Boulevard — between St. Charles and Marlowe avenues — for about two-and-a-half hours on Monday because of a gas leak.

Joe Beno, the city's director of public works, said contractor was "saw cutting" the street in preparation for a new crosswalk when he struck a gas line.

Nobody was injured but the street was closed while crews worked — in the pouring rain — to repair the line.

The street was closed until around 4:40 p.m.

As emergency crews were leaving the scene, another call came in that a tree had fallen on power lines on Arthur Avenue, said fire chief Scott Gilman.

That street was closed for about an hour, he added.
