Birding 101

Are you a nerd if you like to bird? Must you be an Octogenerian to enjoy all things Avian-Related? The answer is NO!

In 2011 a movie was released, entitled The Big Year.  It was about birding.  Yes birding.  It starred Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black.  The premise of the story was the three were avid birders, looking to break the record for most birds spotted over the course of the year.  I won't give away who won, but it certainly shed a fresh light on the hobby.

According to The National Audubon Society, currently there are 51.3 Million people who enjoy birding in the US alone, and the number continues to grow.  Shocking, isn't it?  So apparently there is something to this birding craze!  You may think, sounds interesting, but I don't know where to start...

I've compiled a list of "birding essentials"  for you.  Do you need them all?  Of course not.  Will they make your experience that much better?  I think so.

1.  Binoculars.  How else will you spot that Downey Woodpecker high atop that Birch Tree?

2.  Bogs.  If you have never heard of Bogs, they are the most amazing waterproof boots.  They come in a plethora of styles and colors for men, women and kids.  They range in price online between $30-$150, but they are well worth it.  They allow you the freedom to muck through streams, mud and whatever else you may encounter on your journey.

3. The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America.  The Holy Grail to birding in my eyes.  Easy to understand, easy to identify what you see.  Want it on your phone?  Yep, they have an app for that.

4.  60 Hikes Within 60 Miles.  The go-to book to find out where to go and what to do once you get there.  Who knew the CLE had so many great places to hike?  Many of the places listed are within a half hour of Lakewood.  Sure you could pick up a trail map before your excursion at the nature center, but this book will give real directions and a history behind where you are going and what you are seeing.

5.  Water.  Bring a canteen, bring a waterbottle, bring a thermos.  You'll need it!

6.  Camera.  To prove to the naysayers that you did in fact spot a Great Horned Owl during your travels.

7.  Notebook.  You'll want to keep a running tally of what you have seen/identified.

But why bird?  Because it is fun!  We are so lucky to have the Cleveland Metropark System in our own backyards, with thousands of miles of trails to explore.  Many family friendly activities and events are scheduled every month of the year. Once you start, it will be hard to stop.  You will bird in your own yard, on your way to work, on your way to school, everywhere.

But the best thing about birding:  it's free.
