Why Bike for Beck?

General information regarding the May 19th event Bike for Beck!

I was recently approached to help out with Bike for Beck, happening May 19, 2012. And so, for the next month or so, I'll be using this blog to keep you up-to-date on all things Bike for Beck!

The committee has been working hard to make the first annual Bike for Beck, an exciting and fun event for all involved. I'm just saying, we have meetings on Friday nights. Now that's commitment!

But you're probably thinking, why Bike for Beck? Isn't Lakewood already bike friendly? And what's the Beck Center for the Arts have to do with cycling?

Bike for Beck isn't just about celebrating the fact that Lakewood was ranked the number one city for bikeability in Ohio, or about the recent approval of a bicycle master plan to make Lakewood even more bike-friendly. It's really just a fun, family-friendly way to promote cycling, while raising money for arts education at the Beck Center for the Arts, a true Lakewood treasure.

What I love about Bike for Beck isn't just the fact that it combines two of my favorite things: art and cycling, but it truly has something for anyone. Are you an avid cyclist? Then join us for your choice of a 12-mile, 25-mile, or 60-mile tour that starts at the Beck Center and ends in the Metroparks. Just starting to learn, or do you feel like your just not ready to face those Metropark hills (personally, I know my green cruiser bike won't cut it) then line up for the “Music in Motion” bike parade where you can show off your bike decorating skills. Yes, bike decorating. Anything goes: paint, glitter, stickers. Just pick your medium and let your imagination run free! We all know Lakewood is a creative community, so I have to admit, I'm expecting some pretty imaginative bikes.

Don't own a bike? Don't worry! Head down to Lakewood's West End to check out the local shops and restaurants, see safety and maintenance demonstrations from Bike Lakewood, browse the antique bicycle display courtesy of SPIN Bike Shop, and check out the bicycle-themed exhibit in the Beck Center's main window created by the students at the Virginia Marti College of Art & Design. Then grab a bite to eat and enjoy live music throughout the afternoon.

Like I said, there's something for everyone. I hope you will join us on May 19th for Bike for Beck. Not fully convinced yet? Well, stick around. We're just getting started.
