Trying Out a Couple New Businesses in Town

New resident checks out new businesses: The Sweet Spot and Jammy Buggars.

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of trying two new businesses in town: and .

In this economy, it is great to see new establishments popping up all over Lakewood. It's even better to see that they are truly unique and worth supporting in these uncertain times.

As many of you know, The Sweet Spot is family owned. They also pride themselves in making all their gelato with local ingredients. They also feature local treats such as organic sugar cookies, cupcakes, and pies from bakers from Northeast Ohio.

But really, all I want to talk about is how amazing the gelato is.

Not only are there about a billion flavors to pick from, but they don't mind giving you a sample or two in order to make your decision easier. They were also very patient while my indecisive friend and I made up our minds on what to get. I went with Fig Hazelnut and my friend went with Wild Berry Pie (which is made using actual pies baked at the Humble Pie Baking Co...thus the real chunks of berry and actual pie crust).

It's safe to say I will be back there again (probably tonight) and will most likely never run out of flavors to try. The Fig Hazelnut was smooth and flavorful, with subtle hints of fig, followed by a creamy honey-nut explosion of taste.

If you love gelato, or if you've never tried it before, The Sweet Spot is the perfect place to go. They have flavors from cookies-n-cream to earl grey tea to Lakewood cookie crumble.

Be daring or be safe, regardless it will be delicious, and you can always try something new the next time you stop in. Take it to go, or stick around and enjoy the simple black, white, and red décor.

And while you'd think something so delicious might be overpriced, a small gelato, which is actually three healthy scoops, comes in at $3. It's a great alternative to ice cream or frozen yogurt, and for my lactose intolerant friends, The Sweet Spot is prepared with a variety of sorbets and vegan offerings!

Of course gelato is the perfect treat after a hearty meal from another local business— Jammy Buggars. While you may think it's just your average Lakewood burger joint, it's actually so much more. The menu is small but offers big variety. There are burgers, sandwiches, and a range of entrees with everything from homemade pierogies to meatloaf to shrimp primavera.

And the sandwiches at Jammy Buggars are anything but ordinary. There's a smoked pork loin, a blackened catfish poboy, and even an open face cajun shrimp sandwich. I played it safe and went with a buffalo chicken sandwich, which was surprisingly unique. The bleu cheese mixed with buffalo sauce created the perfect blend of hot and cold, while the roast poblano peppers on top gave every bite an added kick.

Finally, the service was amazing.

Our server was attentive and knowledgable about the menu. And it was clear from observing the other servers that this attention to customer service is just how they operate. Also, don't be surprised if the owner personally delivers your order. That's what I love about local businesses. There's a personal touch that just can't be had at big chains.

The owner of Jammy Buggars is originally from Fremont. Of course this was exciting to my boyfriend who is from Tiffin. There was some slight banter about the towns and their high schools. Only a local business could provide you a good meal and some friendly smack talk.

Obviously, I plan to head back to both The Sweet Spot and Jammy Buggars.

Their variety, quality, and friendly service make them worth another visit...or ten...I hope all you Patch readers will go out an support them.

While there are many established businesses that are constantly supported by the community, we can't forget the newbies and what having them around will mean to Lakewood's future.
