Value World Opening Showing Signs of Delay

The company had hoped to open sooner, but is still working with the city to get approval for the plans.

Value World is expected to open at 11900 Detroit Avenue, in the space of the former Discount Drug Mart.

But when is anyone’s guess.

One of the hold-ups is that city officials aren’t thrilled with the size of the proposed sign at the front of the building.

At a recent meeting, the city’s architectural board of review was split on the company’s red sign, and eventually voted to defer the measure until next month’s meeting.

“From the beginning I thought the sign was too large,” said board member Carl Orban, who’s said more than once that he’s not in favor of large corporate signs. “And I still think the sign is too large.”

“Yes, Drug Mart had a large sign. I know what the past is, and undoing that is something I think we’d like to do moving forward.”

The designers and owner of Value World weren’t thrilled with the decision.

“We will do whatever the city wants with the colors,” said a company representative during the meeting. “If the city wants us to do purple, we’ll do purple.”

“We’ve worked very hard to drop the size of signs.”

No word on whether purple would be acceptable.
