There’s some new life, and a little more “movement” in the building commonly referred to as the Lake Erie Screw Factory.
Think dance, Zumba and Pilates.
Alyssa Wilmot opened up The Movement Factory — a dance and workout studio — in a former office in the massive industrial building on Athens Avenue.
Surrounded by artist studios and other independent businesses in the Lake Erie Building, Wilmot said that The Movement Factory fit right in.
The spacious studio used to be office space before Wilmot renovated. She stripped the drop ceiling and exposed the industrial brick walls.
The area was once the location where Templar automobiles were painted.
“It’s good energy in here,” Wilmot said, pointing to a heart etched into a cement windowsill facing north.
“I wanted to make a change from a traditional gym setting,” she said. “I wanted to make something that was a little more aesthetically pleasing. I like this industrial look.”
In addition to Pilates, Zumba and yoga, The Movement Factory also boasts a range of offerings, including hip-hop dance classes and ballet.
“There are a lot of places that are very girlie, so I wanted to make a place that was gender neutral and comfortable,” said Wilmot, a Cleveland native who spent 10 years on the West Coast picking up tips for what would later become her business.
The Movement Factory, open seven days a week, is hosting its grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the spacious studio at 4 p.m. Feb. 9.
Wilmot said she’ll have instructors on hand and healthy juices available.
But be sure to come in workout clothes, because she’s also offering free “mini” classes.
