Snapshot: Demolition Begins on St. Paul Lutheran Church

Church coming down to make way for a CVS Pharmacy.

Demolition of the abandoned St. Paul Lutheran Church on Detroit Avenue — and the construction of a — has begun.

The stained-glass windows have been removed. The building is cleared. The practice drills with the Lakewood Fire Department completed. 

Now bullzdozers are starting the demolition.

The property — from 15501 to 15523 Detroit Avenue — will extend from Lakeland to Arthur avenues. The building adjacent to the church, which houses , will also be demolished — but not right away.

City officials have said it’s been difficult to find a reuse for the 107-year-old church, which has sat vacant for the past several years.
