Screaming Rooster Closing; Barrio Slated to Open

The popular Mexican restaurant in Tremont is taking over the space at 15527 Madison Avenue on April 1.

Barrio, a trendy Mexican restaurant in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood, will now have a second home in Lakewood.

The restaurant will open its doors in the space now occupied by the Screaming Rooster, at 15527 Madison Avenue.

That restaurant and bar is slated to close its doors at the end of the month.

Barrio will undergo a major overhaul of the space, and is expected to open by May 5 — just in time for Cinco de Mayo.

Tom Leneghan, one of the partners in the project, said that “Lakewood is a gem” and “a perfect fit” for the new venture.

“We feel that Barrio is a great fit in Tremont and it’s going to be a great fit in Lakewood,” he said. “What you’ve got in Lakewood, and what we don’t have in Tremont, is 52,000 people in a small footprint. Tremont only has 9,000 and there’s a saturation of bars and restaurants there.”

Leneghan said that he and business partner, Joe Kahn, signed a lease to take over the space, rather than buy the building.

Leneghan — who in addition to owning several other area restaurants owns a stone masonry company — will give the entire building an overhaul.

Think new brick and stone façade and new entrances and interior layout.

“A lot of people don’t want to take their kids to a bar for dinner,” he said.

Leneghan is expected present the architectural plans to the city within the next several weeks.

We will certainly miss the rooster. Their food is good and their staff is friendly.

Yay! Very pleased to hear this news. I'd like to see Madison fill out with mostly independent businesses. I am happy to let Detroit have all the mega-corporate chains. Maybe it's too early, but I certainly see a trend. Go Madison!

I second what m.z.1 said.

I love hearing a successful businessman say that Lakewood is as desirable and trendy a place to put a restaurant as Tremont. That's not bad company at all. Good for us!

I liked the rooster, but I can't help but see this as a positive development.

I am noticing some new businesses on Madison, west of Warren, notably several art galleries. Hopefully some synergies will develop to spur greater redevelopment along Madison. I am looking forward to walking over to Barrio and seeing what they have to offer when they open up for business. At the other end of Madison, Barroco Grille and Taco Tanto are great additions, now hopefully the Western side of Madison will give this business a try. Good luck Barrio!

hey m.z.1 - that is a great perspective and needs to be heard by city planners at City Hall. how about a PR campaign that encourages small business growth/ artsty places on Madison and the more daily living needs/bigger retails places on the east end of Detroit. so from 117th to bunts on detroit is the big box places and on madison west of the library are the small ma and pa places? i still don't believe 52,000 folks can support 2 major streets of business today, as a lot of the 52,000 folks in Lakewood are on very limited incomes, but hey, with PR that attracts OUTSIDERS to come and eat/shop in Lakewood, maybe there is a window of survival for both streets? Still not convinced, but I do know that with all the new restaurants opening in Lakewood, the City definitely needs to start a marketing campaign as Lakewood becoming the new Gourmet Center/Restaurant Rows of NE Ohio. We definitely have more than Tremont or Ohio City. Now if we could only have a really great Asian place!
