Screaming Rooster Closing; Barrio Slated to Open

The popular Mexican restaurant in Tremont is taking over the space at 15527 Madison Avenue on April 1.

Barrio, a trendy Mexican restaurant in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood, will now have a second home in Lakewood.

The restaurant will open its doors in the space now occupied by the Screaming Rooster, at 15527 Madison Avenue.

That restaurant and bar is slated to close its doors at the end of the month.

Barrio will undergo a major overhaul of the space, and is expected to open by May 5 — just in time for Cinco de Mayo.

Tom Leneghan, one of the partners in the project, said that “Lakewood is a gem” and “a perfect fit” for the new venture.

“We feel that Barrio is a great fit in Tremont and it’s going to be a great fit in Lakewood,” he said. “What you’ve got in Lakewood, and what we don’t have in Tremont, is 52,000 people in a small footprint. Tremont only has 9,000 and there’s a saturation of bars and restaurants there.”

Leneghan said that he and business partner, Joe Kahn, signed a lease to take over the space, rather than buy the building.

Leneghan — who in addition to owning several other area restaurants owns a stone masonry company — will give the entire building an overhaul.

Think new brick and stone façade and new entrances and interior layout.

“A lot of people don’t want to take their kids to a bar for dinner,” he said.

Leneghan is expected present the architectural plans to the city within the next several weeks.
