The word moda means “in style” in French, Spanish, Italian and Arabic.
In Lakewood, it means fashionable clothing without the European price tags.
MODA, Lakewood’s newest retailer, opened its doors last week at 14203 Madison Ave.
Owned by mother and daughter, Paula and Gabrielle McKernan, the store offers new and used clothing. But there are a few other items for sale as well — including purses, sunglasses and jewelry.
“We’re trying to set ourselves apart from other stores,” said Paula McKernan. “We’re trying to keep it hip and young — but we want it to appeal to everyone.”
MODA carries a range of clothing lines that include Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Nautica, Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Diesel, Buckle, Armani, Christian Dior and Banana Republic.
The McKernans renovated the space “top to bottom” before opening. Business has been booming as word spreads around town.
It’s been an effort that’s involved the entire family.
All four of Paula McKernan’s children help out around the store — the youngest a student at .
“I am really thrilled that we all have the opportunity — to have the luxury — of working together,” said Paula McKernan. “They are into it as much as I am.”
The store accepts cash, credit or debit. The store doesn’t offer consignment, but offers store credit for clothes brought in.
