Dru Siley, the city’s assistant director of planning and development, said the company is looking to focus on the larger, “regional” stores — such as the Great Northern Mall location.

But he said he believes the space on Detroit Avenue won’t sit vacant for too long.

“Helping Lakewood’s businesses and addressing commercial vacancy are a focus the administration,” Siley said.

Rumors have been swirling that neighboring Marc’s will be expanding into the space that Jo-Ann operates. Siley said those discussions — between Marc’s and the building’s owners the Coral Company — are ongoing.

“If Marc’s if going to expand that will enhance access to groceries for Lakewood shoppers and better serve the community,” he said.

The has operated for about 25 years. Before it opened in City Center, the store was across the street.

Siley said the closing isn’t welcome news, but added that it will provide an opportunity for local businesses to shine.

“(It’s) important to highlight that Lakewood has a number local business to supply our sewers and knitters such as Stitch Cleveland, River Colors and the fabric shop at Virginia Marti,” he said.

Leonard Green & Partners, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm, bought JoAnn Stores for $1.6 billion in December. At that time,, then a week later they were told it would remain open.

The takeover must still be approved by Jo-Ann shareholders on March 18. Jo-Ann Stores is the nation's largest specialty retailer of fabrics and one of the largest specialty retailers of crafts.

There are 746 Jo-Ann stores in 48 states, including 21 throughout Northeast Ohio — but it could not be confirmed how many of those will close.
