Despite Fire and Vandalism, StrEAT Burger Set to Open in July

The positive news came after the city's architectural board of review approved the building designs, as well as plans for a 40-seat outdoor patio, on Thursday.

This week brought good news and bad news for StrEAT Burger, the new restaurant slated to open in the former space of 56 West.

The project had a minor setback this week after a small electric fire halted construction. Then, vandals struck the property, littering the building and trucks with spray-painted graffiti.

The positive news came after the city’s architectural board of review gave an initial stamp of approval the building designs, as well as plans for a 40-seat outdoor patio, on Thursday.

Izzy Schachner and Jay Leitson partners in the popular food truck StrEat Mobile Bistro are opening a brick-and-mortar establishment in the space at 16300 Detroit Avenue.

Schachner said despite the holdups/roadblocks/hiccups, the restaurant is still on target to open in July.

“Other than the couple of glitches, we’re moving right along,” he said. “I see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Schachner said he’s keeping a lid on many of the details of the restaurant.

“We’ll definitely have great burgers and craft beers,” he said.
