Delta Computers Marking 20 Years in Business

The business has expanded quite a bit since 1993; the business is undergoing a massive overhaul

In 1993, computers were big, bulky and didn’t hold too much memory.

They were expensive, too. The average price of a new machine was about $1,500.

“Today, I don’t even know if I could price one that high,” said Jim Gountis, who owns Delta Computers.

Gountis quietly launched Delta Computers on Madison Avenue nearly 20 years ago. He was the only employee in a small storefront, surrounded by offices.

The Internet was still in its infancy. Gountis traveled to trade shows as far away as Boston and New York City to make ends meet.

He has come a long way on Madison Avenue in 20 years.

Most of the business is still walk-in service — viruses are still among the most common issue — but the company now focuses much of its energy on service contracts for businesses.

Delta Computers expanded into the former offices around it, and now runs support for about 350 computers, from all over. Most of the work is done remotely.

“The business has really evolved,” he said. “We’re a full service company now.”

To mark the 20th anniversary, Delta Computers is undergoing a massive overhaul to the 1,500-square-foot space at 15400 Madison Avenue.

The drop ceiling is gone; the floors and walls have been torn out and re-finished; and new furniture adorns the space.

There’s now a spacious and modern showroom, replete with a flat-screen TV on the wall. The merchandise — think PCs and accessories — is tucked neatly against the walls.

The cabinets in the showroom have been repurposed as part of the new, large service counter.

Now — unlike 20 years ago — there are a few employees staffing it.

Gountis estimates he’s already spent about $10,000 on the renovations and plans to spend the same amount on additional work, including a new awning.

A grand reopening party will be announced soon.
