Detroit Theatre Sold Off Piece by Piece

Sale, on everything from signs to seats, continues today at the 88-year-old movie theater set for demolition this spring.

At the end of an era, everything must go.

Seats, posters and other memorabilia were all sold Saturday at the .

to make way for a .

A few dozen people attended the sale, expected to continue today from 1 to 5 p.m.

Those who came prepared with their own tools and a truck ready to haul stuff away were most successful.

Old, red theater seats were sold for $18 each. But if more than six were bought, the price dropped to $15 each.

The best — or rather best-known movie posters went quickly — all that was left a half-hour into the sale were posters of Disney's "Mars Needs Moms" which never even had a chance to run at the theater before it closed.

Many items had already been sold — such as projector room equipment and the theater speakers — by the time the sale began.

No word on the marquee.

An owner who was busy handling the sale by herself was visibly upset about the sale.
