60,000 Items on the Shelves at Annual Book Sale

Friends of the Library sale slated for Saturday, with a preview sale for members set for Thursday. There's also a special "bag sale" slated for Saturday.

An estimated 60,000 books will be on sale at the Lakewood Public Library on Saturday, when the Friends of the Library open up the sale to the public.

Some of them will sell for as little as 10 cents per book.

But the annual sale — slated for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — just isn’t about books. There’s also videos, music CDs, magazines and more.

Members get access to a preview sale from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Don’t have a membership? No problem. Memberships may be bought at the door for $2, or $5 for the family.

The Friends’ book sale is an annual tradition — two decades running.

Paul Tepley has been a volunteer at the sale for many of those years.

“If you go to the Rocky River book sale, they spread a lot of books on tables,” he said. “Our books are right on the shelves. We have 60,000 books. They’re all in sections, and it s not helter-skelter. We spend a lot of time organizing these books.”

The sale items' subject categories include, art, biography, cooking, gardening, children's, home repair, math, mystery, popular fiction, science, sports, travel and history.

The revenue from the sale will be used to benefit the Lakewood Public Library with the purchase of materials, programming and special projects.
