Closing Out Summer With Storytelling by Foster Brown

On Sept. 10, the Madison Avenue branch of the Lakewood Public Library is hosting the Learning Garden Harvest Performance.

Folks strolling through Madison Park during the Lakewood Community Festival on Sept. 10 will find yet another way to learn something about the world around them.

At 1 p.m., Cleveland Metroparks’ Foster Brown will be singing children’s folk songs about gardening and sustainability to culminate Madison Branch Library’s summer story-telling series at the Learning Garden in .

After singing and dancing, the youngsters will pick all harvestable vegetables to be donated to the to go to hungry Lakewood residents.

“This event is going to teach them about taking care of the earth, to be self-sustainable and give back to your community,” said Julie Strunk, supervisor in children’s and youth services at

Strunk, while stressing the importance of teaching kids about gardening and nature, said there is one definite highlight to the summer’s last event.

“Oh Foster Brown, definitely,” she said. “He’s great.”

Brown said his songs promote “stewardship of not just the environment, but the whole community” and are enjoyable for the whole family.

“I try to incorporate catchy lyrics, gestures and dancing for the kids,” he said. “And adults like it because it’s not so dumbed down that it drives you crazy.”

Resembling a children’s album collaboration of Louis Armstrong, John Denver and Laurie Berkner, Brown’s songs cover everything from watersheds to scat.

“I do songs about spiders and scat to encourage kids to enjoy all the icky stuff that actually helps your garden,” he said. “I call it music with a message.”
