Lakewood Girl Scouts' Cookie Sales Stolen

Brownies of Girl Scout Troop 192 accepting donations, working this weekend to make up stolen money.

In two days, the Brownies of Girl Scout Troop 192 in Lakewood sold more than 250 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies, raising about $1,100.

Then, Wednesday night, a thief stole their cookie sales.

Troop Leader Angie Wolosyn told WTAM that she noticed the money missing after she returned to home from visiting her daughter's school. It appears the thief forced open the back door to her home on W. 114th Street in Cleveland.

Two envelopes containing a total of about $1,100 were stolen.

About a half-dozen girls, in second and third grades, worked all weekend to raise the money. The girls — five of whom are from Lakewood — were posted at the Rocky River locations of Heinen's and Lowe's.

According to WTAM, Wolosyn filed a report with Cleveland Police and she suspects the thief may have been someone who knew she'd been collecting the money. Nothing else from the home was taken, including a camcorder sitting nearby.

Mary Ann Love, at the Northeast Ohio Girl Scouts Council, said she is waiting to review the police report before deciding how the money should be paid back.

“I think when you hear about a theft, you’re upset,” she said. “The fact that it was money that little girls worked to earn — they planned their goals, they did planning and January through March, they’re selling — it’s disappointing. But, first and foremost, the girls are safe.

“For us, that’s a positive.”

More from WTAM:

The stolen money was supposed to be used toward Girl Scout activities like camping. "That’s one thing they were very excited about doing, but now we don't have the funds for it," says Wolosyn.

Wolosyn was originally told that the troop members are responsible for reimbursing the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio for the stolen money, but the Girl Scouts have since said that they will look at the police report before making a final determination.

Seven-year-old Gabby, one of the Troop 192 members, says she felt really sad because they had "sold tons of Girl Scout cookies for nothing."

If anyone is interested in helping Troop 192, they can call Love at 800-852-4474 to donate — or stop by the Walgreens on Lorain Road in Cleveland from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and buy some cookies.
