A Lakewood church has come under fire from the city after they are accused of removing the building's gold onion dome without acquiring the proper permits, The Plain Dealer reports.

St. Gregory the Theologian Byzantine Catholic Church on Quail Street in the Birdtown neighborhood removed its dome last week, the newspaper reports, but did not apply for the required demolition permit before doing it.

Why did they remove it? What is the rest of the story? It is a shame to lose such a beautiful dome.

Makes you wonder if it's for more selling appeal after being on the market? I'm sure whoever buys it for retail use, in all likelihood might have removed it in the end.
