Could This Former Lakewood Resident be the Next Pope?

Sean Patrick O'Malley, born in Lakewood, is the archbishop of the Boston diocese. If you believe the buzz swirling around the issue, he's among the candidates to replace Pope Benedict XVI.

A former Lakewood resident is being considered one of the front-runners for to become the next Pope after the recent unexpected resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

Area (and national) news sources are reporting that Sean Patrick O’Malley, the archbishop of the Boston diocese since, is being mentioned as a contender for the papal post. 

O’Malley was born in Lakewood, but raised in Western Pennsylvania.

According the Boston Globe, the 68-year-old O’Malley lightheartedly talked about the idea.

“I haven’t lost any sleep about it, and I have bought a round-trip ticket, so I’m counting on coming home,” he said.

In addition to his stint in Boston, O’Malley has served as bishop for the diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands and Palm Beach, FL.
