Advance Publications Layoffs Felt in Lakewood

The editor of the Sun Post-Herald was one of dozens of layoffs at Advance Publications on Wednesday.

The layoffs that occurred at the Plain Dealer, the Sun Post-Herald and cleveland.com were felt at home in Lakewood — in more than ways than one.

Carol Kovach, the editor of the Sun Post-Herald, who had been with the company for nearly 40 years, was one of those let go.

A source at the company, who asked not to be identified, said employees were called in, one-by-one, to learn their fate.

“It was awful,” said the employee, noting the tension and sadness in the newsroom Wednesday.

There were other journalists with ties to Lakewood who were also laid off. Ed Carroll, who had recently covered Lakewood but was transferred off the beat, and Erin Beese, who covered education for the Sun Post-Herald, were also let go.

It's not exactly clear how the layoffs will affect the weekly newspaper.

The company will be restructured as the Northeast Ohio Media Group

The Save the Plain Dealer campaign reported that the newspaper eliminated the jobs of approximately 50 journalists, “whose dedication produced one of the country’s best newspapers.”

“The layoffs abolished more than one-third of an already depleted newsroom staff,” according to a recent Facebook post.
