Swingin Sixties Dance Party: Official Monkees Pre-Party

Five O'Clock Lounge, 11904 Detroit Ave, Lakewood, OH | Get Directions »
FREE

A night of sixties-themed music and dancing will take place on Friday, November 16th at the 5 O’Clock Lounge in Lakewood at 8 pm. This free event will also serve as an “official” pre-party for the sold-out Monkees concert the following night at Lakewood Civic Auditorium.

This flashback into the past will include sounds of the 1960s spun by vinyl-loving DJs from WCSB 89.3fm (Beth from “Drinking Electricity” Fridays 9-11p and Erin from “Hot Trash” Tuesdays 11p-1a). There will be a heavy emphasis on The Monkees catalog, but will also feature other popular 60s genres including soul, Motown, frat rock, pop and psych. “The Monkees” television show (which celebrated its 46th anniversary this month) will be shown throughout the night, and there will be Monkees trivia with prizes to give away.

Inspired by the teen dance culture of the fifties and sixties, attendees are encouraged to take to the dance floor and showcase their best moves. Those who can’t boogaloo are invited to sit back and mingle in a comfortable and familiar atmosphere. Monkees fans can come meet other die-hards and set the mood for the following evening’s historic event.

The Monkees have not toured since losing one of their lead singers, Davy Jones, earlier this year. This also marks the first time in fifteen years that guitarist Mike Nesmith has joined any of the members on stage to perform as the Monkees, and it is the first time since 1969 that he will embark on a full tour with the band. Lakewood is one of only twelve cities that will host this tour.

The old black and white photos on the wall indicate that the Five O'Clock Lounge's long history in the Lakewood area dates back to at least the 1950's. Its motto is "a real bar for real people" and the phrase holds true according to one bartender, who says that the Five O'Clock is a place where everyone fits in. Mostly though, the rock 'n roll crowd will almost certianly find themselves at home in this bar where flourecent guitars dot the walls. Cozy seating is found throughout the entire bar area and seems to make many patrons feel right at home, and on the weekends a DJ specializes in old punk music. Leather pants and chains have been seen here on the weekends.

One of the beers featured here is Pabst Blue Ribbon, served on tap, in a bottle or in a can. Happy hour is available on week day nights while Wednesdays give the ladies special drink prices. A jukebox and arcade machines are located right in the back for those with short attention spans.
