Calling All Volunteers - Help Needed at Lakewood Animal Shelter

CCLAS (Citizens Committee for the Lakewood Animal Shelter) is looking for new volunteers interested in working with animals to help out at the Lakewood Animal Shelter.

With kitty season AKA, busy season, just around the corner, the shelter is in need of more volunteers.  Personal efforts by people like you help provide our community's stray cats and dogs with a better quality of life during their confinement and a better chance of finding a new home with a caring, companion family.  Shelter helpers are dependable persons, 16 years and older, who help the Warden on duty on Saturdays between 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing for the physical care of cats and dogs
  • Cleaning cages and kennels
  • Grooming the animals
  • Walking the dogs and socializing the adoptable cats
  • Maintaining a clean, safe environment to attract visitors and encouraging appropriate pet adoptions to responsible individuals
  • Safely displaying cats and dogs to visitors
  • Discussing responsible pet ownership: neutering, vaccinations, identification-tagging
  • Processing adoption paperwork

To become a volunteer you must first get approved through the City by filling out an application form. Don't wait long! There are furry friends that need your help!  Shelter work applications are also available at the shelter during adoption hours.  Completed applications should be mailed or dropped to the City of Lakewood's Department of Human Services at: 12805 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, Ohio 44107.  Once the application process has been completed, you will then go through training so you will be able to help the animals in the best way possible.

Maybe working at the shelter isn't a good fit for you, don't worry - there are plenty of other ways you can help out the animals such as fostering, collecting donations, or helping at fundraisers.  For more information about volunteer opportunities please visit www.CCLAS.info or contact CCLAS Volunteer Coordinator, Amanda Chicotel, at amanda.chicotel@yahoo.com.

I would enjoy helping the animals at the Lakewood Animal Shelter. I looked over the application and read the following:

"Applicant's record check:
Name (maiden AND married)
Date of Birth
Social Security Number
Driver's license
Have you ever pleaded guilty or been found guilty of any Federal or State Law, County or Municiple statue or ordinance, including minor misdemeanors and traffic violations?
I herby authorize the City of Lakewood to conduct a record check of my background and I release the City of Lakewood from any liability for damages arising from said record check."

Can someone please explain why a VOLUNTEER position at a Shelter requires the same type of information that would be asked of a secret service agent?

In this day and age identity theft is a real concern. ALL the details a thief would need to set up a fake I.D. are asked for.

I donate to this shelter regularly. I'd still like to help more. Please offer volunteer positions that do not require so much sensitive information. Thank you.

Maybe the powers to be feel that you might steal a pit mix on it's way to the kill shelter, or worse, take the puppy back home with you and you live in the city of Lakewood. Thats a big no-no. So they need to know everything about you. Big brother is always watching, just like they went after people that stood against the BSL ban back in 2008. Your city government at work, for THEM, not US.

Dear Patch Reader,

I understand your concern. However, since the shelter is city run, they require this information in order to volunteer within a city run establishment. I know this is not the answer you would like to hear but CCLAS cannot control these requirements. If you would like to help CCLAS in other ways (outside of the Lakewood Animal Shelter) please feel free to fill out the CCLAS volunteer inquiry form and send to our PO Box.

Thank you for your continued support. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.
