5 a.m. Workouts Revisited: Three Weeks In

It has officially been 21-days since I started this 5 a.m. workout thing.

In an effort for full disclosure, my workouts did not include weekend days, and I only succeeded in getting up right at 5 a.m. on weekdays during this trail period about 50 percent of the time. Nonetheless, here are my thoughts on the pros and cons of early morning workouts:

Pros
-Its’ done, over with, out of the way. No excuses.
-Less hungry throughout the day and not starving for breakfast.
-More energy in the morning.
-More time in the evening to do other activities such as cooking homemade dinners or taking a walk, for fun.

Cons
-Still somewhat hard to get up. (Coming from someone who loves sleeping in.)
-More lethargic during workouts, not at my highest intensity.
-Sometimes wanting a nap mid-afternoon.
-Going to bed at 9 p.m. (Elderly.)

I did this (5am workouts) for over ten years and a good motivator is a training partner. You'll get up because you don't want to disappoint the other and workouts are more intense as a competitive aspect may develop. A good warm up is key, especially with the cooler weather, I do several yoga movements before hitting the road.
