What Should Go Here?

The vacant Spitzer dealership has been vacant since 2010.

With a plan in the works for a new GetGo gas station at the southwest intersection of Detroit Avenue and Bunts Road, we thought we’d take a look across the street to the abandoned Spitzer dealership.

Following changes in the auto industry, the dealership closed in 2010.

Last year, the city put out a request for proposals for development at the site. Only one — for a senior housing complex — came back.

Nearly one year, later the property still sits empty.

What would you like to see developed at the site?

The vacant Spitzer dealership in the 13900 block of Detroit Avenue sits on nearly two acres of land.

Dru Siley, the director of planning and development, told Lakewood Patch last year that in a city like Lakewood — which has nearly reached its development potential — having that much land to develop, is a valuable resource.

And with an estimated 8,000 automobiles that pass that area each day, so is the location.

So, we ask again: What would you like to see at that location?

Tell us in the comments.

I love the idea of a party center/banquet hall. Right now there are no banquet halls or any kind of meeting center. We have to go outside Lakewood for any parties.

Please email me at shawn.juris@lakewoodoh.net if you have someone with experience and capital to take lead on operating a banquet facility. I agree that this is a niche that could/should be filled.

A community center/teen center...like Middleburgh Heights with a pool, gym, track and a current walking pool. There could be rooms for small and large groups to use/rent for community events/private parties. Right on the busline! Give kids who are not 'joiners' a place to be, to talk, have a staffer from Division of Human Services Youth Division in the place. Leadership training, socialization for immigrant populations...a place for all of Lakewood to rub shoulders.

By animals do you mean pets? I strongly doubt that pets outnumber our 10,000 children (19% of population according to 2010 census). Maybe if you counted all the wild birds. C'mon the county only has 3,000 registered dogs for Lakewood.
