What Should Go Here?

Now that CVS Pharmacy has moved into its new location, there’s a big vacancy on Detroit Avenue. Let us know what you'd like to see open there.

The CVS Pharmacy at 15311 Detroit Avenue has moved a block west.

And now the space is vacant.

We thought we’d take the opportunity to find out what Lakewood residents would like to see open at the abandoned location.

The owners of the property couldn’t be reached for comment, but employees at neighboring businesses said they’ve been told a dollar store is interested in purchasing the property.

Dru Siley, the city’s director of planning and development, said he’s heard the rumor, too. However, he added that nothing’s been confirmed.

So, we ask again: What would you like to see at that location?

Tell us in the comments.

I think it would benefit the area businesses if this space was used for parking.

I would love to have a Trader Joe's in Lakewood but I don't think that space would be big enough.

What about the previous Giant Eagle building on Bunts and Detroit? That building should be big enough.

Peter, thank you for the information regarding the empty building on the corner of Bunts and Detroit. I am glad it will be put to good use.

I am not sure what the size of the old cvs is, but the size of a Trader Joe's is generally anywhere from 8k-12k square feet. If you desire a Trader Joe's in Lakewood, go to their website and plead your case. I already have. I didn't think of this site at the time, but I did urge them to look at the old Ganley at the corner of Grace ave.

It should absolutely be something LOCAL. We're getting *far* too many chains in town lately. You can go to those things anywhere.

Ugh! Anything but a dollar store! A lot of Lakewood is already headed downhill... why ruin this area? Something local would be great! Even a giant parking lot sounds better than a dollar store!!! A Trader Joe's or Earth Fare type store would be awesome too!

While I appreciate your concern for the success of Lakewood, I have to ask, how is Lakewood headed downhill? Aside from a few sour notes like the influx of a chain restaurant or two, all I see are incredibly positive signs - each and every day.

However, I too would not like to see a dollar store there. May as well have a check cashing store there if that were the case.

Trader Joe's/Earth Fare = Drool

What about dividing up the space into 100, 200, and/or 300 square feet spaces for small businesses? Treat it like a condo setup: wrought iron dividers w/doors. Charge a small rent and maintenace would include utilities for each owner. If someone has an existing business, they could have the advantage of the Detroit Avenue location at a more reasonable price. It would help small business owners. Maybe a small hot dog or burger place could have a small stand in there w/3 tables w/chairs. I am just brainstorming.

We have quite a good group of restaurants from Belle to Mars. I am concerned that we have saturated the area. There are some restaurants in that area for many years. I really hate to see any of them close up.

Do I have a small business in Lakewood? Would I be interested in renting a space in this coop? You Betcha on both counts.

Why not just make it a space that the farmers markets can use during the spring, summer and fall?
Not that the library isn't a good venue but a wide open space is much more appropriate.
It could also be a bit of a mixed use space with benches and perhaps a swing set.

That space is prime real estate and should be occupied by a stable tennant. Parks do not generate revenue for the city. They're an expense. The farmer's markets are great, but they also don't generate any money directly for the city...
I hope it's not a dollar store or another hair salon or consignment shop.
