Two firefighters down; civilians trapped; and a collapsed roof.

Well, really that was all a part of a drill at the abandoned McKinley Elementary School on Tuesday.

Lakewood fire officials said the practice drill was designed to be stressful — and seem real — to make the exercise more effective as firefighters tested out their new radio equipment.

Is a building ABANDONED just because it is not currently being used? Vacant it may be, but not abandoned. Our school buildings awaiting repurposing are not abandoned. - Abandonment, in law, is the relinquishment or renunciation of an interest, claim, privilege, possession, or right, especially with the intent of never again resuming or reasserting it. Such intentional action may take the form of a discontinuance or a waiver. This broad meaning has a number of applications in different branches of law. In common law jurisdictions, both common law abandonment and statutory abandonment of property may be recognized.

Yes, I love that anytime a structure is between uses, it is ABANDONED.....

Merriam-Webster: "To cease from maintaining, practicing, or using." Sorry you don't like the word, but this building is abandoned.

I didn't know the Lakewood school board had cease to maintain the building? I believe there is still a preschool using part of it. Nothing personal Colin, It just bothers me when buildings are labeled ABANDONED just because they are no longer being used as their original purpose or are between uses. Also, didn't even realize the only other comment was from Mom...

The school board typically doesn't maintain the buildings in the district, janitors do. ;) And, no, they don't maintain the school anymore.. It wouldn't make sense to come through and clean it every day, as it's been closed for five years. And I don't take offense. The fact is that the building IS abandoned. But I think we're splitting hairs.

I guess were just using different Dictionaries... I'll have to ask the board if they consider the buildings ABANDONED.

I believe that Lakewood school district still maintains this building. I don't believe there is any school activities in this building. But abandoned it is not as I see the police,FBI, as well as firefighters using building for drills. So I don't know who "cleans" the inside but this building is used almost daily. How do I know this, I live on Clifton Place.
