As part of our Visions for Vacancies series, we ask Lakewood readers to share their ideas for some of the city’s empty spaces.
After last week’s story about the vacant Vedda Building, a Lakewood Patch reader suggested that we look into the space at 1413 Lauderdale Avenue.
The property is not listed for sale.
The building, directly to the south of the Plank Road Tavern, was most recently the home to North Coast Extreme.
Dru Siley, the city’s director of planning and development, said even though the North Coast Extreme building isn’t on Detroit Avenue, it’s still a “perfect” location — particularly for businesses that don’t require curb appeal.

way too many more attractive buildings that are sitting empty in lakewood, so tear this one down or give it to a nonprofit or an artist!
btw, why does lakewood allow the CITY CENTER shopping center to not repair or replace that really ugly watch tower by Chipotle? it just looks really bad with big circles for clocks, but no clocks! i recently had friends visit and though they liked a lot of lakewood, they couldn't understand why the center of downtown looked so rundown in some areas, and nice in others! and lets either repaint that flag mural on the building by City Center Park or come up with a new mural. it is looking really bad these days!

I always enjoyed the simplicity of that building and its large windows. I have a good idea for that space, but have to talk to people first.

Perhaps it would be easier to find businesses willing to locate in Lakewood if a property owner could commit to leasing a space without having his private decision subjected to a public referendum. It makes it very hard to locate a commercial tenant when every proposal draws a complaint from some group saying "we want some other kind of business in that space."

Dennis - brilliantly and such good business sensibility you express. I have relocated just a few years ago from having lived in both west and east coasts, as well as growing up near chicago. i love all that lakewood has to offer, but far too many citizens here have only a short perspective and not a long term one on the both the economic and visual health of this city. their main attitude seems to be what is often called NIMBY (not in my back yard - but hey, otherwise i am all for it!) lots hope there are more citizens of lakewood with your perspective that are willing to become as vocal as the small minority of the NIMBY crowd.
