Value World to Move Into Vacated Drug Mart
As soon as construction of the new Discount Drug Mart at the former Ganley Auto dealership, the second-hand chain store is expected to take over.
Value World, a second-hand clothing store with operations in three states, is coming to Lakewood.
But first, the Discount Drug Mart at 11900 Detroit Avenue must complete its move a few blocks west, to the property of the former Ganley auto dealership at the corner of Cohassett and Detroit avenues.
“They’re moving in when we vacate that store,” said Tim Moran, the construction and development manager for Discount Drug Mart. “My goal is May of 2013.”
Value World's Cleveland location, near W. 107th Street and Lorain Avenue, is expected to close its doors.
A real estate transaction has not yet been made, however earlier this year, Lakewood City Council OK’d a measure that paved the way for Discount Drug Mart to take control of a portion of city-owned land that allows better access to the commercial property at 11900 Detroit Avenue.
City officials said the move made the location a “more viable commercial property” should the drug store chain decide to vacate the property.
It did.
Last Thursday, after months of back-and-forth, the city’s architectural board of review gave its stamp of approval on the final proposal.
Demolition of the existing Ganley structure and an adjacent apartment building is expected to begin by the end of the month.
Construction of the new $5 million Discount Drug Mart will begin shortly afterward.

Seems like they cant run lakewood down fast enough,, I am no longer proud to say my familys been here since 1922, And its a shame my property taxes are way to high for what they are trying to turn the city into, Funny Do the ones making the choices of where this store will go live anywhere near the area,, HIGHLY unlikely,, And I do agree with Michael 100%, Lakewood is changing without question and it isnt for the better, thats for damn sure.

I agree with you, Mr. Miller. The truth is the truth, so I don't want any PC bullcrap being shoved down my throat.
I've rented in Lakewood for 25 years and for the longest time, it never seemed to change much. The ghettofication of this city began when money-grubbing, absentee landlords began renting to tenants under the Section 8 and Eden programs and/or rented to tenants without first conducting criminal and employment background checks. Things have gone downhill in a hurry. And the crappiest part about all this? Lakewood's property values have seriously declined, yet taxes are still the most ridiculous in Cuyahoga County. I don't get that. And I would never, ever buy a house in a city that is so clearly deteriorating into a slum.

Wow, thanks, I went to college, spouse has 3 college degrees, including an MBA from Case. I work at Drug Mart in the pharmacy. I love to second hand shop as it is recycling. I live on the Eastern side of Lakewood as it is easily accessible to the shoreway to get downtown and to a university where my spouse is an adjunct professor. So nice you think the East side is "Ghettoized". Biased much Michael? This part of Lakewood is being revitalized too...I will be very happy to have an occupied, tax revenue generating store, verses an empty building...If you look down on parts of Lakewood with such a narrow view, maybe you should move to to Avon or Bay.

Get off your soapbox, Alexandra. I've seen your pedantic attacks on other commenters and I'm not having it. I've had all the schooling and parenting I'm going to get (from better sources than you) and I have zero tolerance for condescending lectures. You think claiming to work in the pharmacy in Drug Mart is some kind of validation? I've never seen such rude, abrasive, disgruntled hired help in my entire life. It starts with the pharmacist and works its way down.
I know Lakewood is ghettoized. Plenty who have been Lakewood residents—some lifelong—agree with me. Anyone who is honest and not fighting some bogus crusade from behind a smokescreen of political correctness and who has seen Lakewood in the recent past can see it's been on the downgrade and is still moving down a slippery slope at top speed. Rent an east-end apartment. Every single property without exception is filled to the rafters with dope dealers that no one is doing anything about. There's not a single coach on the 26 busline where someone isn't sitting in the corner replacing the tobacco in a cigar with pot. Some people think they're fooling someone by being too polite to come out and say what they're really thinking about the recent infestations but when they start working terms like "Section 8" into their conversations, pay attention. People are flooding into Lakewood not to upgrade their lifestyles, but to continue to live out their low-rent lifestyles against a better backdrop.

"...my spouse is an adjunct professor..."
If this was supposed to be some sort of boast, "adjunct professor" isn't even a real job. Anyone who holds is an on-call temp. Of course, I'm sure Value World will be hiring unless they open fully staffed, without having posted job openings to the community, like Menchie's and the bakeries did, and like every other new business in Lakewood does.

Sorry Alexandra- I'm with Michael. That Value World will only drag down the eastern end of Lakewood even more. Why would business owners want to try their luck in a section of the city that has a store aimed at serving the economically disadvantaged? And although you might shop there, the store was not established to serve people who want to be environmentally friendly by wearing others' old hand me downs, but rather those who cannot afford better.

What the city should-can do is hold Value World to a set of standards that uphold the aesthetics of what other new business in LW have done. Instead of having a giant store full of racks and racks of used junk and a big ugly parking lot they should be able to make them conform to a store that is designed well with tact in mind. LW has many antique and oddity type vintage stores that do it with charm and VW should keep that in mind when they design their facility inside and out. The new CVS is a perfect example of this. The builders and city both took in to account the surrounding area and what would fit in to the community and they pulled it off.

Hi Michael,
Unfortunately, it is time to let the past romantic visions of Lakewood be put to rest. Lakewood, like the rest of NE Ohio, is in serious decline both economically and physically (buildings, roadways, etc.) That is the reality today. East Side/West Side of Lakewood is rather pointless for such a small suburb that is aging and declining in population. Anyone living in Lakewood today should be overjoyed that any new business wants to build/open here. The city, like the region, has a challenging future. And with a Governor and GOP party that openly discriminates against women's right, gay rights, immigration rights - Ohio's image is severely tarnished nationally. And any young person with a degree will soon leave for more tolerant and progressive East and West Coasts/Chicago. The brain drain is a future deadening reality in Ohio, yet the only vision we get from our Governor is one of intolerance/hatred and very very retro policy making. If you want Lakewood is re-emerge as it once was, then the whole area of NE Ohio needs to reinvent itself.
I doubt if that will happen. And cities like Portland, Austin, Denver, Pittsburgh, SF, LA, etc. will continue to be the places young ambitious folks will move to, and new 21st technology will build at. No 21st century business wants to relocate in Ohio - what if lousy weather and a right wing Bible government, who move here in 2012?
(case in point, hipster Dredgers Union closes in downtown, for many of these reasons.)

I'm not sure if my area would be considered the "east end of Lakewood" or not, but I know that I love living here and have never once regretted our choice to purchase a home. This rampant crime seems to have skipped my area. I'd just like to say that I'm also an avid thrift store shopper and can't WAIT to have VW so close. Any business is better than a vacant storefront. Also, if thrift stores attract the "wrong kind of people" then why do cities like North Olmsted and Strongsville have them? Something tells me the riff raff aren't bussing in to shop there...

I don't think big thrift stores are bad, but when you put one a block from W. 117th I think it will bring in some bad news from Cleveland.
I've been to the one on Lorain, and you see some normal people just thrifting -- but then you see the bad news, or the really poor people who shop their for underwear and socks and I'm sorry but that is not good for Lakewood.

It's interesting, Gina, that you refer to me in the third person as if I'm not a presence here. If you did that in front of me in person with other people around, it would be considered a demonstration of extreme rudeness. Also, it's a clear-cut example of demeaning behavior based on a conclusion you jumped to without really knowing me or my real-life behaviors and interactions with people. Last I knew, that was the definition of prejudice. I'll underscore that with a presumption of racism, since I'm guessing you;re a person of color moreso than just a sympathizer. Tsk, tsk. For shame!
