Eagles hold off Minutemen, 65-62, to advance to regionals at Cleveland State University on Wednesday.

In what was their first real test of the postseason, the  Eagles' basketball team proved they are up to the challenge, in knocking off and their gaudy 21-1 record, ending the Minutemen’s season at 21-2.

The Eagles began the playoffs with blowout wins over and , before coming up against Revere.

“I’m really proud of our kids, the way they responded when they got down,” said Eagles’ head coach Eric Flannery. “We told the kids at halftime that, in a championship game, it’s the team that believes and keeps it head that wins the game. We were able to keep our heads and keep our composure, and we got the win.”

In a game that saw the Eagles — now 18-5 — down by as many as six points in the first quarter, and up by as many as 14 midway through the third quarter, the outcome was in doubt until the final minute.

Foul trouble early in the third quarter for the Eagles’ Myles Hamilton looked as though it could create trouble, sending the Minutemen to the free throw line five times in the quarter. Hamilton, who remained in the game, responded with 10 points in the quarter. Flannery was very pleased with his junior guard.

“Tonight, without Myles in the game, we were an average basketball team," he said. "With him overcoming his early fouls, we were a great team.”

Hamilton did not lead the team in scoring — which speaks to the depth of St. Edwards’ talent-laden roster. That honor belonged to sophomore guard Elijah Brown, with 17 points, followed by senior guard Delbert Love, who finished with 13. Hamilton had 12 points, including six straight in the third quarter.

Revere senior DJ Bettinger scored 20 to lead all scorers, senior Larry Nance, Jr. dropped in 18 and senior Eric Smith hit for 10 points for the Minutemen.

Flannery and his team roll on, moving on to play Garfield Heights at the regionals at Cleveland State University on Wednesday night. It will be a rematch for the Eagles who lost the last contest, 85-82, on Feb. 4.

St. Edward  has not lost since then, winning nine straight. The question is: Can they keep it going?
