VIDEO UPDATE: Residents 'Not Lovin' the Proposed McDonald's
Dozens turn out at Woodward and Detroit Avenues to oppose the Golden Arches.
Dozens of Lakewood residents are not lovin' a proposal that would plant the Golden Arches of McDonald's at the intersection of Woodward and Detroit avenues.
And on Wednesday night, they let their voices be heard.
Neighbors say they are concerned about the increased traffic and safety issues they expect following the construction of a double drive-thru McDonald’s — with its proposed two entrances and two exits on Woodward Avenue, a residential street of more than 100 homes.
Stay tuned for additional coverage.

Are you kidding me...Keep our kids safe? Right now McDonalds is right across from a child daycare and one block from an elementary school and those kids are safe. I really think these protesters are WAY OUT OF LINE!!!!!!!! Change is good, bring it on!

Exactly what I was thinking. Way over the top with that sign. These people need to seriously get a life. Maybe what they should do is make Woodward a dead end street. Have it end about 200 feet from Detroit Rd. Then they will have no traffic from McDonalds to whine about.

I was at a bus stop close to that stop one morning & witnessed a young boy get hit by a car while he was on his way to school. The driver was in a hurry for an appointment. The boy was simply going to school. How many people are going to be in a hurry pulling out of the fast food joint. Anyone who's been near a fast food establishment knows the truth of that statement. These are innocent children. I live on a street very close to the site. I can not get off my street at certain times onto Detroit, and have to go out of my way to drive down to Clifton & around. There will be even more traffic & I may NEVER get off my street. Forget about it on the weekends!!! If you have no idea what seeing a child hit by a car is like, or trying to get off a street with no light, please be more respectful to people that will be forced to deal with this!!! And, hopefully, you wont know any of the children that will have to suffer so you can grab a quick burger!!!

Dear Jane, Yes change can be a good thing. So lets build a Mc D on the top of your street and see how that works for you. Also the daycare is fenced in. Those children are never let out on their own so the risk of them getting hit is very very low. However the kids walking to and from the middle school may be another story. I'd hate to see someone injured by a Big Mac Attack.

@ Kimberly, I have Marc's Plaza at the end of my street....I live on Elmwood... How many times have you rode up and down my street to shop? Are my kids safe? And how about Grant Elementary School? So far no problems!

I don't think that there should be a McDonald's there. I hate McDonald's. I don't want to look at another restaurant in Lakewood. There are enough restaurants and convenient stores in Lakewood. I think that they should put something there that Lakewood actually needs. Like a place for kids so we can keep them out of trouble. That would be a lot better. People are always saying that kids today are overweight, well stop helping them by building more fast food places. Build something that people NEED!

Ms Simon - I am a member of the Lakewood Outdoor Basketball Committee and we would love to have your kids as part of our program. The courts are open at Kaufman Park.

As someone who lives between Wagar and Woodward, my daily commute is driving right past that location. The last thing I want is to add more time to my drive with hungry customers. Also, I'm tired of chain restaurants filling up Lakewood. Do we really need two McDonald's within five minutes of each other?!

@Noelle (no last name violates Patch Term of Use Policy) - FYI ... the current Sloan Avenue restaurant will be closed when this one is built.

There are three forces at work around this issue 1.) those who believe that motorists going to the new McD's in their neighborhood will be plowing down their kids; 2.) those who believe that NOT tearing down a rundown former movie theatre will somehow maintain the city's charm; and 3.) those who believe that fast food restaurants are the bane of all mankind's existence. Imagine how much better their efforts might be if they all worked together.

How about not allowing McDonald's customers to turn south on Woodward. Or, make Woodward one way from Madison to Detroit.

Be ready to pick up litter from your front yards. I live around the corner from the Taco Bell, and people dump their bags on our street all the time. My other concern is nutrition. Several Harding Middle School students use Woodward as their walking commuting route. The temptation will be too great for those kids.

Emily looks like she needs a happy meal. They come with a toy!
And parents - it's YOUR responsibility to keep your kids safe! You want them to avoid the McDs when they are walking? Make them take the long route to avoid it. And that should cure that whole 'my kid is fat and doesn't exercise' problem someone else mentioned.

And we parents are taking the initiative and not just rolling over when people try to tell us how it is going to be. So don't think that a comment in a place like this is going to influence people who take charge rather than just give in.

As a community member on Spring Garden, where Dunkin Donuts is now located, I can understand the frustration that people may feel with the addtional traffic and the effect on their morning and evening commutes. The morning traffic has gotten a lot worse on our street and sometimes there are 10 cars waiting to get into the drive-thru and parking lot. I know that DD tries it's best to serve their customers as quickly as possible and they have been fine neighbors, it is just very frustrating when I am unable to get out of my street quick and easy. The number one priority should be safety both foot and automobile. I am sure there is a solution that can be made to benefit everyone, but I hope the City and McD's take the time and thoughtfulness to consider their neighbors before making any decisions that may severely impact the neighborhood. I am not in support of the McD's but I can understand why some may want it in the community.

For the record, I don't want the McDs there either. I wish something interesting was going there. The building has been for sale for years. No one bought it. McDs has the money.
Does the city have the responsibility to properly setup traffic, architectural design, etc etc. ABSOLUTELY. Will Emily Bond's sad face and poster cause Ray Kroc and Co. to reconsider? Not a chance.
Seriously, she's even making that yellow lab sad!
All those active and concerned parties, please continue to put pressure on the city to do the right things. But flimsy excuses like 'kids are too fat' and 'people drive 55 miles an hour coming out of drive thrus' won't be taken seriously by anyone.
