New Traffic Poles, Signals Going Up on Detroit Avenue

A multi-million-dollar plan to replace traffic signals at 14 intersections on Detroit Avenue has begun.

A to replace — and synchronize — traffic signals at 14 intersections on Detroit Avenue is well under way.

Crews from two contracted companies took advantage of warm temperatures to install a few of the new traffic posts, as part of the city’s multi-year project to improve traffic flow in the city.

Joe Beno, the city’s director of , said the Detroit Avenue portion of the project should be wrapped up by the end of summer.

“So far so good,” he said, adding that there are 14 total intersections getting new signals — and at least three poles at each of them.

Crews began by erecting the vertical poles, and at some, they began extending the “arms” over Detroit Avenue.

Hanging traffic signals is next, Beno said.

The Detroit Avenue phase of the project cost about $2 million, but the federal government’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement fund shouldering 20 percent of the cost.

Last month, the city , causing some concerns among neighbors.

“Safely moving traffic through a city is a bit of a science,” said Mayor Michael Summers last month, referring to the traffic study that went into the decision.
