Marjorie Building Eyed for Major Overhaul
Building that houses The Exchange and the Root Café is set for some serious changes this spring.
One of the most visible buildings in downtown Lakewood is slated for a major overhaul.
The new owner of the Marjorie Building presented plans to the city's architectural board of review that would reshape the property at 15100 Detroit Avenue.
The building — housing local favorites including The Exchange, the Root Café, Lion and Blue and Tease Hair and Body Parlor — recently changed ownership.
The new owners of the property, Allied Real Estate, bought the building for $600,000 in July.
Plans include stripping the T1-11 plywood siding off the building to expose the brick; installing new windows; and installing new hardware.

The apartments upstairs are also set for a massive renovation.
If approved, the major portion of the project would likely begin this spring. Work to the garage in the rear is expected to begin later.
Dru Siley, the director of planning development, said that the proposed renovation "looks really nice.”
“This brings the building back to life," he said at an ABR "pre-meeting" last week.

Glad that the building that is named after my mother Marjorie Lowrie is being preserved, It was built by her father who was into real estate in the area.

Hi - ditto! any renovations that improve downtown Lakewood are well appreciated by customers! now, can the city of Lakewood or Mr. Siley do something about the faded flag mural that dominates the city view down Detroit? i believe it is on the building across from Chipotle? it is faded, very weathered looking - not an appealing visual to downtown Lakewood and especially with all the updating and improvements happening. Please either put a new mural up that represents more about what Lakewood is really all about, or at least demand some maintenance on this faded Old Glory!

What the heck is wrong with the storefront for Root? It's great looking! The building in this story should be along I-77, not downtown Lakewood.

The building in the accompanying image is the same building there now. The rehab work will strip off that plywood, put glass back in the transoms and provide new awnings and signage. The image, for some reason, has the brick in a wrong, lighter color.

Hear, hear on the flag mural. Didn't care for it when it first went up and really don't now. Have a call for artists and offer a small stipend for the winning design - then source out the implementation to a local company as well. I like the banners that the Beck put up. Nice example of public art.

hi kris - please call your city councilperson and the mayor's office and DEMAND that this really deteriorating/paint peeling flag mural either be restored or changed. it is NOT the image Lakewood Downtown should have. also call Lakewood Chamber of Commerce. Lets get this flag either restored or out of the picture! And how about restoring the clock to the clock tower in front of Chipolte. Another example of the kinda schizo redevelopment happening in downtown Lakewood with no apparent master plan. Where is the city in creating a coordinated image for the downtown? I mean old fashioned street lights for just one block in front of the new Drug Mart on Detroit --- say what????? What does this have to do with the rest of the streetscape in downtown Lakewood? Very Wierd and dysfunctional city planning!

Seriously - what in the world are you talking about? If anything the building is being restored to what it was when it was put up. It's not like they're putting stucco all over it or vinyl siding. It's being stripped down to it's original material. If anything that supports your sentiment.
You understand that computerized drawings don't look anything like reality, right?

I'm not sure I'm understanding some of the opposition to the changes going on here? Stripping off plywood to expose the brick keeps the integrity of this building. You can still see the faded "Norka" from the furniture store that was where Tease is now on the plywood sign. I believe these changes will do this building justice.
