LOOK: New Buildings Taking Shape on Detroit Avenue

A couple of new buildings located next to each other are changing the landscape of a city blocks on Detroit Avenue, once home to the Ganley Auto Group.
Despite the cold, construction crews have made progress on the future homes of Discount Drug Mart and Family Dollar.
The Discount Drug Mart is slightly ahead of its neighbor across Grace Avenue. That project has been a contentious one among neighbors, however Grace Avenue residents won a small victory last week when the city's architectural board of review denied a request for the store to build illuminated signs on that side of the property.
Utility issues have held up the progress of the Family Dollar project has been slightly held up by utility issues. Construction of the 9,000-sqaure-foot, single-story chain discount store is back on track.
Both projects are expected to be completed by the summer.

Why ae they building everything right up to the street?
Makes for an ugly walk , no room for trees or plants, or bike racks , or benches. Create a sterile, cold, and uninviting addition to Lakewood.
Plus once you've made this mistake there is way to make changes. Short sighted Lakewood

Right. Minus the part where bike racks are popping up everywhere, and just about every other building on Detroit and Madison goes 'right up to the street' and that the ABR has stated on numerous occasions that this is their vision.
You might disagree with it, but it's in no way short sighted. It's consistent with the legacy buildings, and provides for the dense feeling of an active cityscape. Would you rather that parking lots be street facing and the buildings buried in the back of the lots?

I like the idea of putting buildings right up to the sidewalk. It makes it feel just like the rest of the city. I applaud the ABR for sticking to their plan.

Their plan is nothing more than a template....shows zero uniqueness and creativity.
There are so many compromises between all the parking in front and what I mentioned. Got to get the stale minds out of position of control. Travel a bit, look in Boulder, Portland, NYC, Paris.....grow your visions, before it is too late.

For those of us who have and are enduring the construction day after day on these two sites, an estimated completion date of Summer 2013 is unacceptable for Family Dollar. It does not take 12 months to build a 9,000 sq ft facility out of ground, utility issues notwithstanding, and this I profess from experience. BTW, is working 7 days a week allowed near a residential neighborhood? I'd kinda like to sleep in on Sunday mornings! Family Dollar started their project in July 2012, DDM in November 2012 -- which one will reach the finish line first? I, for one, would like to enjoy spring/summer outside, swinging on my porch, without all the noise and air pollution generated by inadequate construction project management. I called the contractor, whose sign flaps in the wind for all to see, and who is in charge of the Family Dollar construction site. He never returned my call. I think the residents of Cohassett/Grace have a right to know when you plan to bring these two projects to fruition. It would make the construction more bearable, don't you think?
