Lakewood’s Girls Rugby Team Finishes Second in the Nation
Squad loses championship match to defending national champion.
The Lakewood High School girls rugby team is the second best team in the nation.
By a score of 54-10, the squad lost the national championship match at Stanford University on Sunday.
The girls fell to defending national champion — and girls rugby powerhouse — Fallbrook High School (CA).
“The girls have absolutely no reason to hang their heads,” said Lakewood High School principal Bill Wagner, whose daughter, Jessica is one of the team’s leaders. “The Fallbrook team played flawlessly.”
Earlier in the week, the Lady Rangers beat Kent High School (WA) and upset Divine Savior High School (WI) to earn a spot in Sunday’s championship game.
“Being able to be on the sideline as both the principal and a father of a team member was priceless," Wagner added.
The squad was selected as only one of eight teams across the nation to compete in the 2012 Girls High School National Rugby Tournament.
The girls had a lot of fight this season.
Team members have been working for months to raise money for their trip to California to compete in the tournament.
And earlier this year, the girls helped to introduce a bill in the Ohio Statehouse that would legitimize their sport, lobbying elected officials to change the laws on the books regarding physical education requirements.

Lakewood girls were gracious sportsman and great ambassadors of not only Lakewood but Cleveland and the mid-west. It takes a village to raise girls this good. Thanks to the coaching staff who worked tirelessly to bring them to this level, the rugby parents, the great hometown that supported them.
