Lenten Fish Fries Fired Up in Lakewood

We thought we’d list a few of them in case you’re thinking of ditching red meat for the fish and chips.

It’s sort of an annual tradition in Lakewood.

Lenten fish fries are expected to be the meal of choice for the next several Fridays around town.

We thought we’d list a few of them in case you’re thinking of ditching red meat for the fish and chips.

But, please, if we forgot any, post ‘em in the comments.

Around the Corner: 18616-20 Detroit Rd.; 216 521-4413; There's a fish fry every Friday during Lent; choice of Great Lakes Christmas Ale beer batter cod; Lake Erie perch, haddock; cod, blackened catfish; cabbage and noodles and homemade pierogies. Owner Mickey Krivosh said the fish fries are a big draw.

Georgetown: Krivosh, who also owns the Georgetown restaurant around the corner (pun intended), said the restaurant doesn’t necessarily have a fish fry, but recognizes the Lenten season with entrees that include, scallops, monkfish and prawns.

Jammy Buggars: 15625 Detroit Ave.; 216-767-5922; In addition to the regular pretzel-crusted fish and chips, the restaurant is offering a few other specialty dishes for Lent, including fried shrimp with cheddar grits, Cajun cream corn and tomato salsa; blackened catfish po’ boy, topped with crawfish and spicy slaw; and crab cakes, with corn and black-eyed pea salad with a creole mustard vinaigrette.

Mahall’s 20 Lanes: 13200 Madison Ave.; 216-521-3280; Among the oldest fish fries in the city, Mahall’s is reinventing its fish fry, offering beer-battered walleye and French fries every Friday through lent.

Merry Arts Pub & Grille15607 Detroit Ave.; 216-226-4080; lake perch, a perch sandwich, mussels Merry Arts, Caribbean fish tacos, fish and chips, shrimp and mussel pasta, New England clam chowder and potato and cheese pierogies each Friday during Lent.

St. Luke Catholic Church: 1212 Bunts Road; 216-521-0184; Through April 6, the parish will offer four different entrée dinners — they are all $8.50, unless you get two pieces, then the price is $10.50. Dinners include a side, vegetable and a drink.

Sullivan’s Irish Pub and Restaurant: 13368 Madison Ave.; 216-529-8969; Every Friday. New owner Rich Nedly said the restaurant will feature the regular fish and chips items from the menu. For Lent — from 3 to 8 p.m. Fridays — the restaurant will also offer a buffet with lake perch, mac and cheese, cole slaw and dessert. Both options are $12.99.

Editor's Note: Colin McEwen's wife is one of the owners of Mahall's 20 Lanes.
