Lakewood High School Band Marches to Its Own Beat

For the warm weeks of September, band director Brian Maskow has decided to make some big changes with tropical beach themed halftime shows.

Beach Boys tunes, flip-flops, floatation devices, blow-up sharks and tropical-shirt-clad band members are just some of the surprises set for this September at .

For the past several weeks, band director Brian Maskow has been teaching his 115-member band several memorable songs, like Styx “Come Sail Away,” “Wipeout,” and the theme to “Hawaii Five-0” to match the new theme. 

“For me, it’s really stepping outside of the box because I’ve always been so traditional, and to be honest, it’s been very refreshing,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”

And while Ranger football players cool off at halftime, the band will just be getting warmed up with its old school drum and bugle design accompanied by gliding and high-step marching. 

“I am blessed,” he said. “I have good kids. They are enthusiastic. They want to learn. They are receptive to suggestions and comments,  and their parents are very supportive.”

To see the marching band in action, they’ll be performing this Saturday at halftime during the LHS, Lincoln-West game at Lakewood Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
