Three stores along Madison Avenue — all within a two-minute walk of each other — are hoping to put the spotlight on local artists.
Lots of them.
This Saturday, the Madison Avenue Art Walk will strut their stuff.
The event, supported by the Madison Avenue Merchants Association, will feature artwork that includes acrylic and oil paintings, mixed media pieces and photography.
The Art Walk is set to take place along the corridor between the three shops — 15621 Madison Avenue to 15729 Madison Avenue — from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.
There have been similar events along Madison Avenue, but this is the newest incarnation, organizers said.
Kathy Sinatra-Curran, the owner of Goddess Blessed, who is also the chairwoman of MAMA, said the focus of the event is to showcase the work of local artists.
“You don’t have to buy a no-name painting,” she said. “You can buy a real painting, painted by a neighbor.”
Sinatra-Curran also pointed out the importance of supporting local businesses, citing the “3/50” principal, an idea that encourages people to spend $50 per month at a three local businesses.
“We’re really focusing on local artists’ handiwork,” she said. “We are just blessed with a plethora of so many talented people in Lakewood and in our surrounding communities.”
Baskets full of chalk will line Madison Avenue, and children of all ages are encouraged to make their own art on the sidewalks.
Parking is free on the streets, but there are a few free lots in the neighborhood.
Zydeco Bistro, a local food truck, will be on-hand serving creole-cajun inspired dishes, made with locally grown vegetables.
“We want to try to bring some life to Madison Avenue,” said Christin Sorensen, event co-organizer and owner of Crafty Goodness.
