Guns Allowed in Bars and Restaurants, Starting Today
However, the new law doesn't sit well with everyone.
The law allowing people to take concealed guns into restaurants and bars goes into effect today.
With more than 100 bars and restaurants in Lakewood, the measure makes some a little uneasy — including the owners of some establishments in the city.
“Guns are not meant to be in bars,” said Ryan Krivosh, who co-owns the Around the Corner bar as well as the upscale Georgetown restaurant (formerly Three Birds) across the street. “Guns and alcohol are not a good combination.”
The new law allows the owners of bars and restaurants to post signs keeping guns out. If there is no sign, those who carry firearms into bars are not allowed to drink in them.
Krivosh said he will most likely put up signs at both of his establishments.
“I don’t care if I offend one person out of 1,000 in order to keep my customers safe,” he said. “I would like there to be no guns in any bars in Lakewood.”
Gov. John Kasich signed Senate Bill 17 into law in June, after it passed both the state Senate and the House.
The new law doesn’t stop at bars and restaurants, but also includes nightclubs, malls, museums and sports stadiums.
“Guns and alcohol don’t mix,” Lakewood Police Chief Timothy Malley told Lakewood Patch in April. “It could provide some concern.”
Nickie Antonio, who represents Lakewood as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, took her concerns a step further.
“I think this is ridiculous and dangerous,” she said. “Is this really the wild, wild west?”
Antonio voted against the measure, as did State Senator Michael J. Skindell, D-23, representing Lakewood, who was one of the seven senators who voted against the measure.
Julie Hutchison, co-owner of the Root Café in Lakewood, called the new law “disgusting.” She said she won’t allow people to carry concealed weapons into her Detroit Avenue establishment.
“I am going to post a sign, and I am only going to go into restaurants that have a sign,” she said. “It’s really crappy. Maybe we can repeal it. I don’t know why anyone would want this.”

I agree guns and alcohol are a bad mix. Some people and alcohol don't mix well. Part of the hazard is any use of a firearm in a crowded area. I'll be curious if the new law creates any real problems. I hope the legal gun carrying public is calm and smart. I also think it's sad civilians feel a need to be armed.

No I did delete it, sorry Peter...I was absolutely horrified that a comment would be made like that in this day. Lakewood should still be embracing Diversity so our school systems can continue to flourish. That mentality has nothing to contribute to Cleveland and Lakewood's success, while we flounder.

@Valerie, If I was in an eatery and a deranged person entered with the intent to kill everyone in sight, I would pray that the LEGAL handgun owner would end his miserable life after he/she shot the first person and not the next 10. I would be glad to give the police a statement of what went down, instead of a statement of a toe tag on me as Im being carted out.

FYI... In this article it mentions a few times how guns and alcohol don't mix. But what about 3000# cars and suv's? And it just so happens at all there establishments. So, Should they put up signs stating no cars without a proven sober driver? Good luck with that one.

The bad guys are carrying weapons with total disregard for any laws and they carry them where ever they want. I am a law abiding citzen that has been fingerprinted, passed a background check and have taken classes on carrying a gun--I understand that if I consume alcohol and carry my gun it is a felony. Who do you want sitting next to you in a bar or restraunt?
