Family Dollar Store Eyes Former Ganley Auto Location

Preliminary plans are expected to be rejected at Thursday's Architectural Board of Review meeting.

Family Dollar, a chain discount store, is looking to open up shop in a portion of the former Ganley Dealership at the corner of Detroit and Grace avenues.

The plans call for the store to be built on the northeast portion of the property at 13215 Detroit Avenue. An adjacent building on the property would be demolished to make way for parking.

But don’t expect construction to begin anytime soon.

Dru Siley, the city’s director of planning and development, said there is still plenty of work that needs to be corrected on the architectural plans. The city’s Architectural Board of Review is expected to come to the same conclusion at its meeting Thursday night.

“This is pretty far away from what we’ve approved in the past,” Siley said. “If you look at the CVS project, that’s an extremely high-quality design. This doesn’t meet those criteria that the ABR has consistently required over the last few years."

Siley acknowledged that the site plan was “respectful of pedestrian-friendly requirements,” noting the structure would be built up against the sidewalk.

“We look forward to working the folks from Family Dollar, but they have a lot of work to do,” Siley said.

The Architectural Board of Review meeting is slated for 7 p.m. Thursday at Lakewood City Hall.

This is not welcomed in my opinion. We already have too many drug stores.. and too many dollar stores.

What Lakewood needs, is not another dollar store but some for someone to compete with the Big Bird store! (Giant Eagle)
Sure the gas perks seem nice, but don't think your not paying for that gas!!!
Marc's helps, but we need a full service grocery store to help drive prices down through good honest competition. Not Dave's, they are just a part of Giant Eagle.

Wow new to the Patch and plenty of catching up to do. Folk's dollar stores and the like typically move into areas which are experiencing populations with decreasing incomes and shrinking populations. Not the city I left 20 years ago.
