Extended Hours for Door-to-Door Solicitors Considered

Existing law prevents solicitors from knocking on your door past 8 p.m. — proposed law looks to change that.

As the law stands, solicitors cannot knock your door past 8 p.m. in the city of Lakewood.

A proposed ordinance may extend that to 9 p.m.

“Our research showed that the courts widely prefer a 9 p.m. curfew on door-to-door solicitors under the First Amendment to the Constitution,” said Kevin Butler, the city’s law director.

“Our ordinance currently imposes an 8 p.m. curfew, which has been found to be an unreasonable restraint on free speech in the context of canvassers who solicit money for their various causes.”

Butler, who introduced the measure to council on Monday, said he’ll “brief council more fully” on the proposal at its next rules and ordinances committee meeting.

this is rediculous! There are too many solicitors in Lakewood now. I have never lived in a community with more door to door sales people....the thought of having to put a no soliciting sign on my home is embarrassing. But it's going on the front door this afternoon!

I personally think 9:00 p.m. is too late, especially in the winter months. 8:00 p.m. is good. Many young children go to bed at 8:00 p.m. and when it is dark out, I am always leery about answering an unexpected caller at the door. In the summer months it is different when it is light out and families are still out and about outside. I wonder if they would consider a time based on season like until 9:00 during the summer months and until 8:00 during Fall and Winter? That is my two cents. :)

The limit should be set by the sun ... that is ... door-to-door soliciting should not extend beyond sunset and preferably 1/2 hour before ... and ... all solicitors should be licensed with that authority plainly visable on their person

Anyone who think that attaching a flier for their preferred political candidate to my front door will magically turn into a vote for that person is sadly out of touch.

We have a 'do not call list' so why not a do not disturb list. NO soliciting at this house, PERIOD.

I agree this is ridiculous, I am trying to put my kids to bed at 8 and would be seriously angry if someone knocked on my door then, although I am angry when they knock on my door at dinner time too.

No solicitation on my doorstep and no calls at dinner unless emergencies.

I can't think of one thing I want to buy from a doorstep solicitor except from school children selling for a neighborhood school. I don't want political or religious solicitors.
Nine PM is too late. I would be in favor of a more stringent ordinance. The daylight suggestion is a good compromise.
