Design Plans for New Drug Mart Tabled
City’s architectural board of review to vote on the issue next month.
A vote was postponed for the proposed Discount Drug Mart’s design plans at the site of the former Ganley auto dealership.
The city’s architectural board of review decided to hold of a vote until its July meeting.
Architects and officials representing Discount Drug Mart presented plans to the board Thursday night. Several neighbors, many of whom oppose the project, attended the meeting.
Earlier this month, the city’s planning commission tabled a decision on a request that would consolidate the property and change the south parcels from residential to commercially zoned properties.
Drug Mart officials presented redesigned site plans, that razing an 11-unit apartment building standing in the way of the development.

I went to the ABR meeting concerning the new Drug Mart. Towards the end of the evening DM's architect mentioned that finally a traffic study had been approved. What is so glaring about this is that the Study will be conducted while Garfield Middle School is out on summer break. By stalling on a request we ( the residents of Grace Ave) made a month ago , Lakewood's Director of Development will now be able to gift - wrap a Traffic Study that can only approximate the traffic flow from the yet unbuilt Dollar Store , can only approximate the traffic flow from the yet unbuilt Drug Mart, and will either ignore or approximate the traffic flow from Garfield Middle School. Not only is this willfully negligent - in the end it could prove to be tragic. I recognize that Dru Siley is acting as Drug Mart's unofficial agent but I had hoped that common decency would prevail and the safety concerns of the children of Garfield Middle School would be taken into account.

I think the time has come to start thinking of forming a coalition of citizens who stand opposed to the franchising of Detroit at the expense of Lakewood residents. If Mayor Summers approves of developments like The Dollar Store and The new Drug Mart at the corners of Grace, if he approves of the eviction of our neighbors from the Grace apartment building to make way for a parking lot, if he approves of the encroachment up Grace by granting Drug Mart conditional use then he should own it and we should oppose his re-election. I suspect that there are a number of disaffected citizens in the wake of Mr. Siley's vision of turning Detroit Ave. into a strip-mall.

Disagree. All big boxes are not bad if they are planned in a sustainable/smart growth guideline. Most residents want more business in Lakewood, not less. With a population that is at 20% in near/in poverty, Lakewood must develop more retail tax base. While we would all want more unique mom and pop shops, they have to be economically reliable. Until our current depression turns around, most Lakewood citizens welcome Mayor Summers vision to encourage business growth. Think Bloomberg and how he save NYC. Maybe Summers can do the same for Lakewood.
