City to Demolish ‘Dilapidated’ Houses With $100,000 Grant
Council OK’s resolution accepting $50,000 from the state’s Moving Ohio Forward program, matched by the county prosecutor’s office.
The city of Lakewood has officially accepted $100,000 in grants to demolish properties deemed a nuisance — or properties that will likely soon have that designation.
Dru Siley, the city’s director of building and housing, said that demolition will begin in early 2013.
“Our hope is that they will become a part of an adjacent owners’ lot,” he said.
City council passed a resolution Monday to accept the grant money.
Half of the funds come from the state’s Moving Ohio Forward program, and the county prosecutor’s office is matching the $50,000 grant.
The funds, along with the demolition, will be administered by the Cuyahoga County Land Bank.
The properties, declared nuisances, eyed for demolition are:
- 1592 Newman Avenue
- 17450 Shaw Avenue
- 2067 Bunts Road (however, the property owner has appealed the city’s nuisance declaration)
Three others haven’t been declared nuisances, but that decision is "imminent,” said Siley.
They are:
- 1427 Scenic Avenue
- 1589 Newman Avenue
- 1503 Victoria Avenue

Does the city have a 'Demolish-a-House' request form?

What I would like to see is that the City would allow someone to tear down the home and recyle the Wood and other materials that can be used again.

Hoping adjacent properties will benefit from a lot split, especially on Newman. Houses are on top of each other. Keep up the good work improving our neighborhoods.

That's a great idea. I saw this blog http://1914foursquare.blogspot.com/2012/09/architectural-treasures.html about getting some parts for a renovation from some houses in Lakewood. I am in renovations and definitely could use some boards for floor repairs. Or at least send some of the usable building materials and details to the Restore http://www.gchfh.org/Restore/index.html
