City May Want to Change 'Community Vision'

In 1993, city officials came up with a comprehensive, 180-page document outlining short and long-term goals for Lakewood, called the “Lakewood Community Vision.”

But Dru Siley, the city’s director of planning and development, said it’s time to take another look at the plan.

“Since that was 20 years ago, council and the administration are evaluating the ideas and progress, with an eye towards updating that vision later this year,” he said.

The reevaluation is necessary because a lot has changed since Bill Clinton’s first year in the Oval Office.

“There are ideas in the Community Vision that will always be germane to Lakewood and will serve as a benchmark,” Siley said. “But some ideas may have been timely in 1993 and now no longer apply.”

Siley said recent ambitious projects, including the and the projects, were additions to the Community Vision, gave officials new, valuable information about the city, but Siley hasn’t identified any specific changes in the overall master plan.

“I don’t have any preconceptions going into this project,” he said.

And if any changes are going to be made, it will be a gradual, public process.

“What we’ll probably do is have a series of public planning commission meetings to examine the vision,” Siley said.

The first planning commission meeting to discuss the plan is Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at .
