City Looks to Update 1993 Community Vision Plan

A workshop, slated for Monday, is first in a series focusing on community development.

The last time the city of Lakewood visited its Community Vision document, President Bill Clinton was in his first year in the Oval Office.

A lot has changed in Lakewood since 1993.

Lakewood City Council and the Planning Commission will begin the first in a series of workshops to update the city’s Community Vision on Monday in the University of Akron-Lakewood’s Bailey Building

This workshop — to take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. — will review the current vision, invite discussion and outline possible courses of action.

“What do 52,000 people agree is the vision of tomorrow?” said Dru Siley, the city’s planning and development director, at a planning commission meeting earlier this year.

“What’s the common theme? That’s going to be the challenge."

Back in 1993, the planning commission, along with residents, civic and business leaders identified four areas of concern to develop over a number of years, including the city’s image, housing, economic development and physical environment.

Siley said recent ambitious projects, including the BikeLakewood plan and the Detroit Avenue traffic light synchronization projects, were additions to the Community Vision, gave officials new, valuable information about the city, but Siley hasn’t identified any specific changes in the overall master plan.

Working groups attacked each of the four areas and determined the length of time each project would need to finish with short-range (18 months), mid-range (3-4 years) and long-term projections (5 years) in managing 52 initiatives.

City officials will announce additional Community Vision meetings in the future.
