Cash Mob Looks to Save Local Girl Gallery from Closing

A group of citizens are getting together with the goal to keep the from closing.

Artists, friends and customers will assemble to shop at the Detroit Avenue gallery for a planned “flash mob" on Sept. 22.

“Fans of the gallery were alarmed when owner Linda Goik by end of September,” said co-organizer Jeanine Gergel in an email. 

“Many of us asked what could be done to save it. The answer: The gallery simply needs more business. If you love Local Girl, this is your chance to help keep it alive.”

that customers aren’t spending as much as they used to — meaning artists, also hit by the recession, are also struggling to make ends meet.

“I believe that art is therapeutic, but we’ve got bills that need to get paid,” said Goik, who opened Local Girl Gallery eight years ago. 

The flash mob organizers have something to say about the closing.

They’re encouraging residents, customers and friends to prevent it from happening, by asking them to spend at least $20 at the gallery from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 22. 

The other requirements for the flash mob?

“Meet three people you’ve never met before, and have fun,” Gergel said. “This is the time to start your Christmas shopping, stock up on hostess gifts, and maybe even buy a little something for yourself."
