When most people think of Black Friday shopping, they don’t necessarily think of small businesses.

But two Lakewood businesses had two different stories to tell on Friday.

Tamara Racin, owner of Paisley Monkey, said business at the children’s store on Detroit Avenue didn’t increase.

“It was just like any other day,” she said.

Karen Harris, 38, was in Paisley Monkey with her 4-year-old daughter Nina on Friday.

“Even if it wasn’t Black Friday, I still would have come to look around,” said Harris. “It’s a beautiful day out, so we were out anyway.”

Things were a little different on the other side of Detroit Avenue.

Chas Geiger, co-owner of Geiger’s Clothing and Sports, said the 79-year-old Lakewood retail staple saw a big rush first thing in the morning, but then things tapered off.

“They seemed to all be going after those Vera Bradley bags,” he said, pointing to a display of the signature floral-patterned line of women’s bags near the front door. “It slowed down a little after that, but we’ve still been busier than usual.”

Those purses and totes and handbags were 25-50 percent off on Friday, and one of the only special sales in the store.

“It seemed to do very well,” Geiger said.

While Racin didn’t have any special Black Friday sales at Paisley Monkey, she was gearing up for Saturday, when children’s author Donna Scott Nusrala will be signing her book, “Twinkle Toes,” around 11 a.m.

“We’re excited for Saturday,” Racin said.

Geiger said he hopes Saturday will bring as much good fortune as Friday.

“But one of the things that’s true in business,” he said, “is that every day is different from the last. You never really know what to expect.”
