300 Families Receive Week's Worth of Food

Food bags delivered Saturday by LCAC included turkey, stuffing, potatoes, rice and cereal.

Dozens of volunteers braved the beginning of more than 3 inches of snow Saturday to brighten the holidays for 300 Lakewood families.

The Lakewood Charitable Assistance Corporation packed and distributed 300 bags containing a week’s worth of food to families and seniors across Lakewood, from the parking lot at the Lakewood Masonic Temple.

The bags were complete with all the holiday fixings – turkey, stuffing, a 10-pound-bag of potatoes and pumpkin pie, along with rice, cereal and other everyday items.

Volunteers were on hand from St. Edward High School, Lakewood City Schools, Lakewood Kiwani’s Club, two rotary clubs and the Masonic Temple.

John Hunter, a board member at LCAC, said this is the third and final food bag delivery of the year for the organization.

“We deliver bags to 300 families at Thanksgiving, and then 300 more at Christmas,” Hunter said, adding there are about 10 families who receive bags at both holidays. “We also deliver the weekend before Mother’s Day.”

Hunter said the families come from lists from Lakewood Community Service Center, Trinity Lutheran Church and the schools.

“There’s a huge need in this community,” Hunter said.

Without volunteers, Hunter said that need wouldn’t be met.

But as he points out, there’s a joy in giving.

“At the end of the day, you feel better then when you started,” he said.
